ISME26 CODE OF ETHICS

37th ISME World Conference Code of Conduct

The International Society for Music Education (ISME) is committed to providing a respectful, inclusive, and professional environment for all participants at the 37th ISME World Conference and all related activities.

This Code of Conduct applies to all conference spaces and interactions, including sessions, performances, workshops, exhibitions, social events, and all associated online platforms and communications.

Expected Conduct

All attendees including presenters, performers, delegates, exhibitors, volunteers, and staff are expected to conduct themselves with professionalism, courtesy, and respect.

Participants should engage in constructive dialogue and demonstrate respect for diverse perspectives. While it is not expected that participants will agree with all viewpoints encountered at the conference, it is expected that ideas are expressed in a professional and respectful manner that invites conversation rather than confrontation.

Participants are expected to ensure that all presentations and contributions properly acknowledge knowledge sources and intellectual property. Plagiarism is not permissible.

Respect, Inclusion, and Personal Conduct

ISME values a global community and recognizes that participants come from a wide range of cultural, professional, and personal backgrounds. All participants are expected to uphold these standards regardless of differences.

Harassment, discrimination, racism, bigotry, intimidation, stalking, unwelcome physical contact, or any form of disruptive or inappropriate behavior will not be tolerated.

All participants are expected to respect personal boundaries and obtain consent in their interactions with others.

Professional and Scholarly Environment

ISME maintains neutrality regarding political and religious advocacy. While scholarly discussion of relevant issues is appropriate, political or religious campaigning is not appropriate within conference sessions or events.

Participants are expected to contribute to a professional environment that supports learning, collaboration, and respectful exchange.

Recording, Photography, and Media

Unauthorized audio or video recording and distribution of conference sessions or event content is not permitted without prior consent of the conference organizers.

Participants are expected to respect the privacy of others. Photography or recording of individuals, performances, presentations, posters, or exhibits should only occur with appropriate permission.

Digital Conduct

Expectations in recording extend to all digital and online conference spaces, sessions, including conference apps, chat platforms, livestreams, and social media interactions associated with the event. Participants are expected to engage respectfully and professionally in all digital environments.

Enforcement and Reporting

Session chairs and/or moderators are authorized to interrupt and stop any inappropriate or disruptive behavior and may ask the offending individual to leave the meeting space.

Concerns regarding violations of this Code of Conduct should be reported to conference organizers. Reports may be made in person at the registration or information desk or through designated conference communication channels. Urgent safety concerns should be reported immediately to on-site staff or venue security.

ISME will make reasonable efforts to handle reports confidentially where possible. Anonymous reporting options may be provided.

ISME prohibits retaliation against any individual who reports a concern in good faith or participates in the review of a report.

Consequences

ISME reserves the right to take appropriate action in response to violations of this Code of Conduct. Actions may include, but are not limited to:

  • Verbal or written warning

  • Removal from a session or event

  • Revocation of conference badge or access privileges

  • Removal of presentation or exhibitor privileges

  • Removal from the conference without refund

  • Referral to venue security or local authorities when appropriate

ISME may act in response to conduct occurring outside formal conference sessions if it impacts the safety, integrity, or environment of the conference community.
