ISME warmly invites all delegates to the Opening Ceremony of the 37th ISME World Conference.

Marking the official beginning of the conference, this special evening celebrates the conference theme, Unity in Music Education: Building Bridges for All, through music, culture, and community.

The ceremony will begin with a traditional Welcome offered by Elder Kevin Deer, recognizing the Indigenous Peoples whose lands have long been places of learning, gathering, and music-making.

Throughout the evening, delegates will enjoy inspiring performances by talented young Canadian musicians representing a diverse range of ensembles and musical traditions. The program will also feature a musical presentation by a First Nations music educator, Sherryl Sewepagaham, honouring the rich musical traditions and living cultures of Indigenous Peoples in Canada.

Whether you are attending your first ISME World Conference or returning as a long-time member, we invite you to join colleagues from across the globe as we celebrate the beginning of a week of learning, sharing, and making music together.

We look forward to welcoming you to Montréal and to the 37th ISME World Conference.

Lorenzo Somma is a Montréal-based choral conductor, pianist, musical director, and educator. Trained in jazz piano with Lorraine Desmarais, Pierre Leduc, and Yves Léveillé, he has developed a musical practice that bridges jazz, pop, choral music, and musical theatre.

Since 2019, Lorenzo has collaborated regularly with acclaimed stage director Serge Denoncourt as a musical director on several productions, including Hair, Annie, Les Choristes, and Bernadette The Musical. His expertise in vocal coaching has also led him to prepare choirs for major productions and events, including the choirs directed by Gregory Charles.

As a lecturer at McGill University, Lorenzo conducts the university's jazz choir and works regularly with singers from the jazz department. Alongside his university teaching, he conducts school choirs at both the elementary and secondary levels.

Lorenzo holds a Master's degree in Choral Conducting from McGill University and is currently pursuing a Doctor of Music degree at the same institution, where his research focuses on musical theatre.

This summer, he can be heard as keyboardist in Titanique, the hit musical parody presented at Espace St-Denis, featuring a cast that includes Véronique Claveau.
