Name
Resilience, Participation, and Hope in Music Education
Date & Time
Thursday, July 30, 2026, 11:50 AM - 12:20 PM
Description
In today’s increasingly divisive cultural and political climate, music teachers often work under restrictive conditions shaped by exclusionary policies and ideological pressures. These challenges threaten teachers’ sense of agency, belonging, and professional purpose, raising urgent questions about how they persist and reimagine their practices. This presentation explores Paulo Freire's concept of hope as a powerful force for sustaining resilience and political participation in such contexts.
Drawing on a multiple-case study with five Florida music teachers navigating divisive concepts and laws, this presentation will illuminates how participants nurtured hope through everyday acts of engagement. The study utilized policy knowhow as a theoretical lens, revealing how teachers actively interpret, negotiate, and transform local policy discourses into meaningful action within their classrooms and communities. Through analysis, hope emerged not only as an emotional resource but as a catalyst for reimagining the purpose and possibilities of music education. Attendees are invited to reflect on how cultivating hope can strengthen resilience, spark creative participation, and transform how music education responds to the challenges of our time.
