Name
Examining the Hip Hop Education Guidelines
Date & Time
Monday, July 27, 2026, 3:20 PM - 3:50 PM
Description
Hip Hop is the most listened-to music genre in the world, yet is strikingly absent from the music curriculum in most K-12 schools in the United States. Growing from its roots in NY in the 1970s to its cultural revolution, hip hop culture pervades most of our everyday media interactions, from music to clothing to fashion and beyond. However, there is a bifurcation of the pre-service experiences of most future music teachers and the pedagogical tools necessary to facilitate hip hop instruction in the classroom. The past few years, a group of six hip hop educators called the Hip Hop Roundtable met to identify basic guidelines for hip hop instruction, to guide teachers with its basic structure and standards. As these guidelines were developed, they then met with a larger group of 30 individuals at the Hip Hop Education Retreat in November of 2024 to work on codifying this work. This session will examine the resulting document, the Hip Hop Music Education Toolkit for K-12 Educators, which outlines these guidelines as well as how to utilize best practices for integrating Hip-Hop culture and pedagogy into formal education. It breaks down the areas of study to its core elements of History, Appreciation, Composition, and Performance. Each section identifies the grade level competencies, rubrics, suggested activities, and knowledge. Participants in this session will explore the genesis of the guidelines, discuss areas of conflict with traditional educational norms, and leave with a greater ability to advocate for facilitation of hip hop education in their areas.
