Description
The study examines the transformation of the pabasa ng pasyon in the 21st century, focusing on how Filipino communities reinterpret this traditional Lenten chant through innovative musical and cultural practices. Conducted in the southern part of the Philippines, the research highlights how local devotees have introduced new forms of performance to revitalize faith expression. Once performed as an unaccompanied, metrical chant led primarily by elders, the pasyon has evolved into dynamic forms that now include rhythmic accompaniment, instrumental backing, and influences from contemporary popular music styles. These creative adaptations have attracted younger participants, breathing new life into a long-standing devotional tradition. Using ethnographic observation and interviews, this study explores how modern renditions of the pasyon sustain religious devotion while fostering intergenerational and communal ties. Findings reveal that these musical innovations do not diminish the ritual’s sacredness but instead renew its spiritual and cultural vitality. The 21st-century pasyon demonstrates how tradition endures through adaptation, bridging generations, inspiring faith, and reaffirming the resilience of Filipino spirituality expressed through music.
