1716 - Building bridges between schools and researchers: Lessons from two quasi-experimental studies in music education

Implementing quasi-experimental research in schools poses methodological and practical challenges, (Gopalan et al., 2020), particularly in music education, where organizational and pedagogical constraints often limit experimental control (Cain, 2012; Conway & Jeffers, 2004). These challenges highlight the tension between scientific rigor and feasibility-often overlooked in dominant conceptions of research that tend to marginalize practice-based inquiry (Cain, 2012; Gopalan et al., 2020; Roulston et al., 2005). While some studies outline general methodological considerations (Conway & Jeffers, 2004; Gopalan et al., 2020), few provide concrete, experience-based recommendations grounded in the realities of elementary music education.This paper addresses this gap by exploring the question: Which practical considerations should be accounted for to ensure the successful implementation of quasi-experimental research in music education within elementary school settings? It aims to identify these considerations and propose guidelines and tools to support novice researchers and those regarded as “outsiders” to the school environment (Conway & Jeffers, 2004; Czerniawski & Thomason, 2025).Using a self-study approach grounded in teacher-researcher perspective (Czerniawski & Thomason, 2025; LaBoskey, 2004; Roulston et al., 2005), this paper draws on two quasi-experiments conducted in elementary music classrooms. Data for reflection included research logs, field notes, and post-hoc reflections of methodological decisions. Rather than reporting new empirical findings, this contribution focuses on the insights that emerge when researchers operate simultaneously as practitioners within the environments they investigate.Several practical considerations emerged:• Organizational planning: coordinating schedules, aligning data collection with school activities, and managing room availability.• Pedagogical adaptation: addressing student learning needs and adjusting data collection timing and duration.• Communication: presenting the research in accessible ways to parents, students, and school staff, establishing ongoing dialogue and raising awareness among them about the principles of research rigor.• Validity and transferability: balancing scientific rigor with contextual flexibility through anticipation and responsiveness to the needs of the school environment.Together, these findings underscore that the success of quasi-experimental designs in music education depends not only on methodological rigor but also on researchers’ capacity to adapt, negotiate, and collaborate within the complex realities of school life, as highlighted by Gopalan et al. (2020). Building on these insights, this paper contributes to bridging research and practice through concrete lessons that inform future studies. We suggest extending these considerations to secondary education. This article sheds light on the conditions required for music education research that is both rigorous and feasible, while fostering stronger mutual understanding between researchers and schools.
