Description
Music Educators know from Dr. Patricia Shehan Campbell’s breadth of work that immersive, active participation is the key to fostering deep musical understanding and personal expression. This is the basis for ethnomusicological field work- to immerse oneself in the culture. Drawing on scholarship that emphasizes situated learning, embodied listening, and community-based musical engagement, this paper examines how Musical Getaways, an international music and tour operator and up and coming leader in musical study abroad experiences, functions as a pedagogical model for global music education, connection, and community engagement. This presentation will demonstrate how immersive music travel can inform curriculum and pedagogy in music education to build bridges across cultures. Using a qualitative approach, this research covers itineraries, interviews with tour organizers and musicians, as well as feedback from students and participants. Reflexive field notes and recordings serve as supplementary data- we will watch as students experience music as a living, culturally grounded practice. Participants often report a deeper understanding of local musical practices and contexts, and a greater understanding of their own musical identity in relation to “other.” Also discussed are challenges like the tension between tourism and authentic engagement. Musical Getaways emphasizes participant learning outcomes and guiding principles for ethical, authentic music travel pedagogy. To summarize, this study argues that Musical Getaways breaks the mold and creates a new model for educational tourism, study abroad programs, and community engagement by fostering sustainable collaborations with local music communities. Further research could explore possibilities for developing virtual or hybrid models of musical exchange and collaboration with host communities in co-creating curricula that reflect shared ownership and deeper reciprocity in global music education partnerships. Overall, Musical Getaways is the new leader in musical tourism and aims to authentically and ethically connect travelers to the soul of each destination. They not only build bridges, they also guide us across the bridge.
