Description
Hemispheric lateralization- the study of how the brain's left and right hemispheres contribute differently to cognition-is often oversimplified in popular psychology. Ideas such as the “rational left brain” and the and “emotional right brain” misrepresent the complexity of the brain’s organization. Yet, in these claims is a kernel of truth that points to a deeper, more nuanced understanding of how the hemispheres shape our perception of reality. In his seminal work, The Master and His Emissary, psychiatrist and neuroscientist Iain McGilchrist describes the more nuanced truth that while both hemispheres are involved in nearly all cognitive functions, they attend to the world in fundamentally different ways. The right hemisphere- the titular “master”-is holistic, contextual, and attuned to the living, dynamic nature of reality. It is sensitive to metaphor, irony, and nonverbal cues, and crucially, it is aware of its own limitations. In contrast, the left hemisphere attends with abstraction and detail, categorization, and utility. Its focus is narrow and precise, enabling analysis and manipulation of the world, but it entirely lacks awareness of the broader context within which it operates. Both modes of attention are essential; we must be able to perceive the world as an interconnected whole while also isolating parts of it for interaction. However, McGilchrist warns of a cultural shift toward left-hemisphere dominance- one where abstraction and utility override meaning- resulting in an impoverished and ultimately totally distorted view of reality. This paper will take Mcgilchrist’s study of hemispheric lateralization and apply it to the formation of musicians. Education of a musician is the formation of the heart, and this is precisely what Mcgilchrist describes as a “right brain-led” art. There are numerous overlaps with spirituality and religious practice. I will use McGilchrist’s lens to look at the western spiritual tradition- principally through the work of Catherine Aubin, O.P.- and a more Eastern approach to spirituality- through the work of Patrick Curry and his writings on Wonder. I will also use as a as Byung-Chul Han’s cultural analyses, particularly in his works The Burnout Society, Vita Contemplativa, and Saving Beauty. I will analyze various classic pedagogical approaches, including Chopin, Liszt, Heinrich Neuhaus, as well as certain contemporary approaches to pedagogy. The goal of this paper is to thereby look at the different aspects of pedagogy; the “technical” which cannot be neglected, but how they must be put in service of the whole person.
