Description
This paper presents the research project Sound of History - An Intercultural Exploration Through Music. The presentation describes how an international student group in a Higher Music Education context collaborated with their researcher/teacher to develop spaces for intercultural experiences through music. From 2023 to 2025 two teachers/researchers created a series of concerts highlighting music repertoires from a group of bachelor and master students' homelands: Spain, Iraq, Ukraine, Palestine and Brazil. The countries have in common that conflicts of the past are reflected in diverse and rich music cultures including traditional classical music, folk music, jazz, and improvised-inspired genres. Through the concerts, the participating students, their fellow students, teachers and audiences met with different music cultures and became involved in dialogues about music in diverse environments. The study refers to eight artistic performances which included musical repertoires and cultural history, verbal texts and dance. The discussion leans on document studies in ethnomusicology, music history and analysis of five music students' narratives about exploring their own culture from an outside position as international students at a Norwegian university. The study showed that exploring musical concepts based on the international students' cultural heritage and musical backgrounds, enriched the discourse of music and meaning for the whole student group, involving them in new ways of understanding. Consequently, music performing became connected to music philosophy, identity studies and issues about culture and democratic values. By giving space for respectful musical exchange we approach music education with an understanding that all music genres are contextually situated, and can nurture and create compassion between different groups and nations.
