Description
Achieving musical excellence is a complex process that requires the development and mastery of auditory, cognitive, technical, and musical skills. It also involves managing performance anxiety—highly prevalent among musicians—and fostering mental health, which is often fragile within this population. The World Health Organization (WHO) defines mental health as “a state of mental well-being that enables individuals to cope with the stresses of life, realize their abilities, learn and work well, and contribute to their community,” rather than simply “the absence of mental disorders.” Approaches focused primarily on dysfunction may offer a limited perspective, overlooking a positive dimension such as overall well-being. Moreover, despite the pressing needs of this population, few interventions have been co-developed with stakeholders, taking into account participants’ profiles and needs. This project was designed to address this gap among musicians and music students in Québec, Canada. This study aimed to identify relevant interventions and suitable delivery modalities to address the psychological needs of musicians. More specifically, its objectives were (1) to assess well-being across demographic and musical variables—including sex, gender identity, age, professional status (student vs. professional), and musical genres—to identify subgroups most in need; (2) to identify perceived needs and preferred interventions based on individual characteristics; and (3) to identify potential tools, training formats, and intervention strategies to support musicians’ personal and professional development. To achieve the objectives, a questionnaire-based study was conducted with a diverse sample of music students and professional musicians across the province of Québec. In addition to standardized measures of well-being, the survey collected data on interventions and resources perceived by participants as beneficial to their mental health and artistic sustainability. Quantitative analyses were performed to identify significant patterns and group differences.Findings offer a detailed overview of the current state of well-being among Québec musicians, highlighting both strengths and areas requiring targeted support. Preliminary findings reveal significant differences across demographic and musical variables, underscoring the importance of context-sensitive strategies in mental health promotion and artistic training. Participants also identified a range of strategies and interventions they consider helpful, providing practical insights for future program development. This research contributes to a growing body of literature on musicians’ mental health, by offering evidence-based recommendations for designing tailored interventions that foster well-being.
