Date & Time
Wednesday, July 29, 2026, 12:20 PM - 12:50 PM
Description
This preliminary study maps higher education programs in music education offered in Lima, Peru, providing a descriptive foundation for future historical and archival research. Five key institutions were included in the mapping - Universidad Nacional de Música, Escuela Nacional Superior de Folklore José María Arguedas, Universidad Nacional de Educación Enrique Guzmán y Valle, Universidad Peruana Unión, and Escuela Superior de Folklore Theodoro Valcárcel - all of which offer a five-year undergraduate program designed to prepare future music educators.Data were collected from institutional websites, official curricular documents, and published course plans. The analysis focused on program length, admission requirements, the presence of pre-music college programs, acceptance rates, and admission processes. Findings reveal notable differences in admission requirements, particularly in whether prior music training was required and the number of seats available for incoming students. These variations seem to shape pathways of access and distinct professional trajectories for aspiring music teachers in Lima, resonating with other Latin American contexts such as longstanding tensions between pedagogical training and musical content in Argentina (Costa & Diniz-Pereira, 2018; Shifres & Gonnet, 2015) and limited pedagogical preparation within university music programs in Brazil (Mateiro, 2010). Moreover, these findings connect with broader scholarship on equity and access in music teacher education worldwide reflects similar concerns (Howard, Swanson, & Campbell, 2014; Powell, Hewitt, Smith, Olesko, & Davis, 2020), while critical perspectives in Latin America further call for decolonial approaches to the field (Shifres & Rosabal-Coto, 2017).In sum, this initial mapping provides a diagnostic overview of music teacher education in Lima, Peru, and establishes a point of departure for future research on the historical development of these programs, as well as for policy initiatives aimed at advancing access, equity, and quality in higher education across the country.
