Community Music Education through Sound Assets: A Case Study of Inter-Ethnic Integration in Southwest China
Date & Time
Monday, July 27, 2026, 2:50 PM - 3:20 PM
Description
This study examines the role of “sound assets” as cultural and educational resources in a state-engineered inter-ethnic residential integration community in Guizhou, Southwest China. It adopts a convergent parallel mixed-methods design, integrating qualitative approaches—including semi-structured interviews, focus groups, and participant observation—with a quantitative survey to ensure triangulation and strengthen the validity of the findings. The results indicate that everyday sounds and festive sonic practices rooted in traditional customs constitute the primary sources of sound assets in the community. These include the soundscapes of daily life, public gatherings, mass entertainment/ leisure activities and festivals, which not only reflect the cultural life of different ethnic groups but also serve as important carriers of memory and identity. Although residents currently have only a limited understanding of the broader social and economic potential of such sounds, there is a gradual rise in awareness, particularly in relation to opportunities created by cultural tourism and heritage industries. At the same time, deficiencies in teaching resources including most notably the shortage of qualified instructors, systematic curricula, and adequate facilities contribute to low levels of satisfaction with existing community music education. The study calls for the systematic development of a theoretical framework for sound assets and highlights the need for digital platforms capable of collecting, curating, and circulating local soundscapes. More broadly, it demonstrates how sonic practices can sustain traditional knowledge while fostering intercultural dialogue, cultural continuity, and collective identity, thereby providing a practical model for community-based multicultural music education.
