Date & Time
Friday, July 31, 2026, 9:30 AM - 10:00 AM
Description
Music education has played a vital role in the UNESCO Convention for the Safeguarding of Intangible Cultural Heritage (2003). The integration of technology into music education has created new avenues for cultural learning and expanded the range of cultural expressions. However, there remains a lack of consensus regarding the role technology should play in this educational process. This study aims to explore how technology can support music education as a cultural expression and enhance the understanding of cultural heritage through music education.A community-based project on "Zhu Zhi Ci" - a poetic form of Intangible Cultural Heritage in Hong Kong - was designed to leverage technology in ways that support teachers and students in learning music as a cultural expression. Guided by the Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge (TPACK) framework (Mishra, 2006, 2019), the project integrates technology, pedagogy, and content knowledge to create meaningful learning experiences. By incorporating the creation of new choral compositions using poetry, the development of digital stories, and research on the characteristics and cultural significance of "Zhu Zhi Ci." The TPACK-oriented model fosters dynamic engagement in the implementation of the project, ensuring that students are not only passive recipients of knowledge but active participants in cultural exploration.Over 300 primary and secondary school students participated in the project, providing valuable insights through feedback obtained from surveys and interviews. The findings indicated that music education is perceived as an effective tool for preserving local cultural heritage. Notably, there was a significant increase in students' appreciation of cultural heritage following the integration of technology into music education. Furthermore, the study demonstrated that the TPACK-oriented model can be utilized in future roles related to cultural preservation, perpetuation, and development, underscoring its relevance in modern educational practices. This project represents a holistic approach that highlights how technology can enhance music education while also playing a vital role in preserving cultural heritage. By cultivating musical skills and fostering a sense of belonging in Hong Kong, it empowers students to connect with their cultural identity and actively participate in the community.
