Description
The purpose of this study was to examine the role guitar instruction in a juvenile detention center. This study took place in a secure detention center serving male and female residents aged 12-17. Participants took part in a 10-week guitar course based in popular music. The study was guided by the following research questions: 1) What elements of a music class in a juvenile detention center contribute to feelings of musical competency? 2) How does a music class in a juvenile detention center impact participant confidence? 3) How do social dynamics impact learning in a juvenile detention center? Data included six focus group interviews approximately 15 minutes each. Exploratory case-study methodology was used to analyze interview transcripts. Participants reported a sense of personal growth rooted in acquiring new skills and performing music that they enjoy. Further, the felt that they gained knowledge and the ability to focus. Challenges included physical difficulty strumming and discomfort holding down strings leading to frustrations. Positive peer interactions were rooted in an encouraging group dynamic and teamwork. Participants also reported that performing music served as an emotional outlet. Participants expressed the confidence to continue playing guitar after detention alongside the ability to look up music such as tablature or chord sheets. The nature of the facility demands clear pedagogy and an encouraging social atmosphere leading to continued musical engagement. A guitar-based curriculum alongside positive social structures may serve to facilitate learning, while providing musical opportunities for residents. Findings may also guide teachers seeking to implement music instruction in a juvenile detention setting.
