Description
This study, linked to the research project "Musical Education in Brazil in the 19th Century" investigates how musical education became institutionalized in Goiás in the 19th century. Its focus is Vila Boa de Goiás—now the city of Goiás and the former provincial capital. The research addresses both the broader field of musical production and the specific curricular incorporation of music at the Colégio Lyceu de Goyaz, focusing on the period from 1831 to 1889. The overall objective is to clarify how musical education, practices, and institutions shaped local social life and, in turn, were shaped by it. Methodologically, the research combines bibliographic and documentary approaches within the context of Bourdieu's praxeology (Bourdieu, 2004, 2011, 2013, 2014). The analysis mobilizes the concepts of habitus, field, and capital to unveil the historical, cultural, and symbolic structures of that society. The empirical corpus draws primarily on nineteenth-century Goiás newspapers—Correio Oficial de Goyaz, O Publicador Goyano, A Plebe: Pátria e Povo, O Porvir, and Jornal do Commercio—accessed via the National Library’s Hemeroteca Digital. These sources are complemented by secondary literature by relevant authors who discuss the topic, enabling a historiographical reconstruction attentive to both institutional trajectories and everyday practices. In this context, this research investigates, from 1831 to 1889, the institutionalization of music teaching in Vila Boa de Goyaz and the curricularization of music at the Colégio Lyceu de Goyaz. As partial results, 86 data have already been collected containing agents and institutions in the musical scene of the City of Goiás in the 19th century.
