Description
The paper provides a portrait of John Mardarosian, co-founder and Director of a private music school, based in Dublin. A qualitative research paradigm, drawing from ethnographic and phenomenological orientations was utilised. An emergent narrative storyline was crafted centering around John’s key life milestones. The story was filtered through the lens of John’s musical experience along with broader cultural trends in music to ascertain the experiences and values that shaped his life. Data collection involved an in-depth conversation with John and document analysis of other sources. The Choral Triad of Agency (Emirbayer & Mische, 1998) provides the theoretical premise for analysis. The interplay of structure and agency in John’s life is explored through relational and temporal lenses. Emergent themes of transformation, care, practical wisdom and hope are discussed as they relate to Irish music education. John’s life story reminds us of the importance of sustainability and balance in the pursuit for educational improvement. John possesses an ability to reflectively distance himself from some structural aspects of the contexts which have encompassed his life story. He also possesses a high level of interpersonal awareness and a sophisticated capacity for executive action. John’s external position alongside formal educational systems affords him a maneuverability that allows him to navigate between complex institutional structures brokering pathways for change within systems. Challenges John has encountered in his professional life have been met with a deep iterative knowledge derived from his rich musical and cultural background, his ability to practically-evaluate complex interpersonal situations in real time and his capacity for dreaming and executing new creative, agentic possibilities. Research suggests an ongoing gap exists between arts policy and arts practices in schools with barriers such as ability, gender and economic circumstance continuing to impact participation (Conaghan, 2024; DEY, 2025; Murphy & Eivers, 2023; Smyth, 2020). John’s agentic actions offer a pathway towards achieving more authentic arts engagement across all social groups. John’s activities provide for a multiplicity of possibilities and succeed in bridging education policy and classroom practices while integrating digital learning opportunities in a type of global classroom (Chappell, 2022). His vision models the traits of positive mindset, persistence, courage, openness and critical reflection orienting his life and work in a deep wisdom that resonates with the values and ideals of a balanced, hopeful and creative educational philosophy (McCarthy, 2019). His professional journey stands as a living paradigm of a Janus-faced, transformative pedagogy, one that critically reflects and acts (Freire, 2017/1970; Jorgensen, 2003) centres relationships (Wegerif, 2011), and cultivates creative spaces alongside and within formal educational systems (Green, 2008; White & Lorenzi, 2016).
