Description
This paper presentation discusses how Conservatoriums of Music[1] in the United Kingdom, Europe, Australia and the United States, are aligning their tertiary curriculum delivery with community engagement activities delivered through access programmes. It considers the aims and goals of such activities including the benefits from the perspective of the institution, the tertiary student body, participants in the access and engagement programming and the larger musical ecosystem. It discusses examples of how the training of tertiary students can optimally be connected to community engagement and pre-tertiary programming. This field of activity is linked to research in the area of tertiary music curriculum renewal, career pathways for music graduates, the growth of community and participatory music in the community and the social role of the Conservatorium. (Lawson et al., 2025) (Higgins & Bartleet, 2018) While a consideration of the social role of the tertiary Conservatorium is not new (Renshaw, 1986), this is a timely point at which to re-examine how a conservatorium connects with and supports its community. Given the well documented rise in the portfolio career path and growth in community and participatory music, it is also important to consider how Conservatoriums are ensuring that graduates have the required skillset to contribute to society and ensure a sustainable career. The access and engagement programmes of Conservatoriums also deserve serious consideration as they perform an important element in the music education ecosystem. Amongst other initiatives and institutions, the paper presentation includes discussion of the European Master of Music New Audiences and Innovative Practice, Juilliard School of Music and Drama Fellowship Programmes, Royal College of Music 'Sparks' Programme, the Guildhall School of Music and Drama’s community engagement activities and the Queensland Conservatorium of Music.[1] In this paper, Conservatorium of Music is a broad term used to refer to tertiary music institutions that may also include Conservatoires, Conservatories, College of Music, Academy of Music and School of Music.
