Description
The Enduring Inspiration of an Extraordinary Pedagogue: Pianist Yvonne Hubert in Paris and MontréalLittle did Yvonne Hubert know when she launched the Ecole Alfred Cortot in Montréal in the late 1920s that she would be recognized a century later as having been one of Canada’s most influential piano teachers. This presentation, based on research at the fonds Yvonne et Marcel Hubert at the Université de Montréal and on concert reviews and articles published during Hubert’s lifetime, will provide insights into a pedagogical approach that was both methodical and creative. It is part of a larger project to capture the essence of Hubert’s teaching for future generations.*Beginning with a brief assessment of Hubert’s career as a child prodigy and as a young professional in France, we will consider the repertoire she performed as the underpinning for her evolving career as a piano teacher. This aspect of Hubert’s career has generally been underappreciated, since she ceased performing around 1950 to focus on teaching and is not known to have made any recordings. A perusal of the many concert programs that Hubert managed to keep confirms the impression that she had a special affinity for the music of Debussy and Ravel and indicates that she also had a command of the standard repertoire and enjoyed exploring works by contemporary Spanish composers. The second part of our presentation will focus on aspects of Hubert’s pedagogical approach with advanced students. During the latter part of her career as a Montreal-area piano teacher, Hubert taught not only in her private studio but also at institutions such as the Conservatoire de musique de Montréal and the Ecole Vincent d’Indy. The appreciative tone and specific references in correspondence Hubert received indicates how students came to value her teaching and mentoring. We will see how Hubert’s unflagging energy, her generous spirit, and her concern for artistry and expression motivated her students to aim for technical refinement and musical integrity.Concluding remarks will summarize ways in which Hubert’s teaching created a bridge between the musical cultures of Paris and Montréal and enabled not only exceptional students but also those less gifted to develop their performing skills. The author/presenter, who studied with Hubert for several years, and the co-author/presenter, who studied with one of her proteges, will also share brief anecdotes related to their personal experience with Hubert’s eclectic approach. Keywords: Yvonne Hubert - piano teacher - artistry and expression
