Description
The influence of Katalin Forrai (1926-2004) in sharing the Kodály Concept with the World was extraordinary. Having been a student of Zoltán Kodály, she was assigned the task of developing early childhood music education within the Kodály Concept. Forrai was quite successful with her own teaching at the kindergarten of Csobánc utca in Budapest, Hungary, but she also became one of the most international and highly regarded Kodály clinicians of all time. Throughout her career, she presented at least 136 lectures, demonstrations, research papers, teaching workshops, and courses in twenty-six different countries throughout the world.Katalin Forrai made her first international presentation in 1964 with a kindergarten teaching demonstration and workshop at the sixth International Society for Music Education (ISME) conference held in Budapest, Hungary. Her name was not even listed in the program, but her presentation made a strong and lasting impression. The success of this teaching demonstration and workshop led to the development of her international career as a Kodály clinician. In 1966, Forrai travelled outside of Hungary for the first time to present at the seventh ISME conference, which was held in Interlochen, Michigan, in the United States of America. Forrai served as a member of the Hungarian delegation and presented her research paper, “The Musical Education of Children Until Their Age of Schoolyears in Hungary." It was significant that the communist government allowed Forrai to travel outside of Hungary, which was a country where, at the time, very few people were granted permission to leave. Forrai continued to travel outside of Hungary for the next thirty-four years with her last presentation being given in Paris, France in the year 2000.Not only was Katalin Forrai active as a successful Kodály clinician, but she also held positions of leadership within the international organizations of ISME and the International Kodály Society (IKS). She became a board member of ISME in 1976 and by 1980, she had established the Early Childhood Music Education Commission. She went on to serve as President Elect, President, and Past-President of ISME from 1986 to 1992. She was active in the IKS for many years, serving on the Research Committee and elected Vice-President in 1979.The international influence of Katalin Forrai was incredible not only in the development of the field of early childhood music education but also in the dissemination of the Kodály Concept.
