Decolonizing Creativity Education through Cross-Cultural Philosophical Dialogue in the AI Era
Date & Time
Tuesday, July 28, 2026, 4:05 PM - 4:35 PM
Description
Keywords: Creativity Education, Cross-Cultural Comparison, Decolonizing Methodology, Posthumanism, Muta-Education, AI Era.Background and Rationale: The global discourse on creativity education, crucial in the era of Generative AI, remains significantly dominated by Western paradigms rooted in cognitive individualism (Glăveanu, 2021). This intellectual homogeneity can act as a form of epistemic colonization, marginalizing robust non-Western philosophical traditions (Tang & Werner, 2023). To truly achieve the conference theme of "Building Bridges for All," it is argued that we must endeavor to decolonize the theoretical foundations of creativity education by engaging in deep, equitable cross-cultural dialogue. This research aims to address the critical gap in foundational ideological comparisons.Research Design and Methodology: The study employs a Comparative Multiple Case Study (CMCS) approach to map the ideological landscape of arts creativity education. It focuses on the perspectives of influential scholars from diverse contexts, including those from the East (e.g., Xie Jiaxing 谢嘉幸, Leung Bo-Wah 梁宝华) and the West (e.g., Pamela Burnard, Liora Bresler, Howard Gardner). The research introduces an innovative "Dialogic Methodology" that seeks to enact cross-cultural dialogue at the methodological level. It synergizes tools such as Pamela Burnard’s phenomenological "River of Experience" with Xie Jiaxing’s hermeneutic framework for oral history (distinguishing "Fact/史实" from "Story"/故事). This integration aims to facilitate a culturally sensitive understanding of how these ideologies evolved.Core Theoretical Dialogue and Contribution: The research centers on the dialogue between emergent ontological frontiers. The core analysis explores the convergence and divergence between perspectives such as Burnard’s Posthumanism, which views creativity as emerging from "Assemblages" of human/non-human actors, and Xie’s "Muta-Education" (元/缪斯教育), which conceptualizes creativity as an "Anti-Entropy" life force.By systematically comparing the ideology, ontology, and methodology of key thinkers, this research endeavors to construct a "Global Ideological Map." The research seeks to develop a synthesized framework—"Roots, Wings, and Assemblages"—that explores pathways for integrating diverse philosophical positions. This study aims to contribute toward the ongoing efforts to decolonize creativity research by suggesting a more inclusive, culturally responsive foundation for fostering creativity in the complex human/AI environments of the 21st century.
