Description
This ethnographic case study emerged from a long-standing international collaboration rooted in personal relationships and mutual cultural curiosity. Building bridges between cultures requires sustained personal engagement, local insight, and a shared commitment to overcoming challenges. These values shaped an intercultural education project, setting the stage to explore learning across musical and educational traditions. This case study examines the learning experiences of advanced-level voice students from Scandinavia and Turkey during a week-long intercultural music education project held in a wooden cabin situated in a nature reserve near Izmir. Guided by the research question “What are the learning experiences of advanced-level voice students when engaging with a foreign teaching tradition in nature in a non-traditional classroom setting?” the study draws on interviews with ten participants to explore how music can serve as a bridge across cultures and contexts.Students reported increased emotional openness, artistic motivation, and a sense of community, which they attributed to the serene natural environment and the absence of digital distractions. The exchange of teaching traditions and musical interpretations encouraged reflection, empathy, and personal growth. Participants described how nature amplified their connection to music, while intercultural dialogue expanded their perspectives on technique, expression, and identity.Findings highlight the transformative potential of music education when rooted in collective experience, cultural exchange, and spiritual connection to place. The project demonstrates how immersive, inclusive environments can support holistic development and inspire future collaborations across borders.
