Date & Time

Description
Inequitable access to quality Music Education opportunities in New Zealand continues toproduce uneven outcomes for schools and their students. With shifts in the current government coalition curriculum priorities, Music as one of four disciplines under The Arts are not proposed to be on the agenda until at least 2027. In the interim, to lobby for the deficits in government leadership, commitment and investment in both teacher and student Music Professional Learning and Development (PLD), Music Education New Zealand Aotearoa (MENZA) the official government recognised Music Education subject association, is looking to connect with related music organisations within New Zealand to collectively challenge the status quo in a much more effective and powerful way than previously. The impact of this combined advocacy effort on government Music Education practices and policies has the potential to disrupt current curriculum development plans. Giving urgency to Music Education being included as a significant and fundamental form of expression, both personal and cultural, and as a vital part of a holistic education is imperative. Currently value is very much placed upon the importance of our musical heritages of New Zealand’s diverse cultures, including traditional and contemporary Maori and musical arts. This paper presentation will outline the important leadership role MENZA has to play in a proposed strategy going forward.
