Description
Although music is often used for stress relief, evidence shows the the prevalence of stress and health concerns among musicians is high, and can hinder the professional development and academic achievement with lack of adequate institutional support. This study examined (1) music students’ perceptions of healthcare and wellness support within music education; (2) relationship between physical and mental wellness; and (3) factors strongly associated with wellness concerns. Using a cross-sectional design, a survey of 125 (N=125) music students in Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area of China on a 10-point Likert-scale ratings and multiple choice questions on the perceived importance, effectiveness, and integration of mental wellness support was conducted, and a mixed method of qualitative and quantitative analysis identified the trends and associations with collected statistics. Students commonly rated existing health and wellness support as inadequate which expressed a strong demand for more integrated and practical resources. The result highlighted barriers including the limited access and awareness and perceived interdependence between physical and injury concerns and stress, with preferences for embedded curricula, proactive injury-prevention guidance, and confidential counseling. These findings indicate a substantial support gap along with clear student demand, institutions should implement supportive wellness curricula, evidence-based injury-prevention strategies, accessible counselling, and faculty development and coordinate with campus and community health partners, to cultivate a healthy musician in the Greater Bay Area of China.
