The Intersection of Spirituality and Personality in Music Teaching: A Historical Qualitative Study
Date & Time

Description
Spirituality is all about connection. Connection thrives through understanding people and personalities. Many students find an environment of fellowship more conducive to learning and collaboration. Yet, establishing a spiritual connection in private lessons can be a lengthy process. Building trust and learning the best pedagogical approaches for the student is essential but could take years to establish. Using the Myers-Briggs Type Inventory (MBTI) as a starting place to learn about students’ personalities as a starting point provides faster insight for the teacher. The simple dichotomies between extraversion/introversion, sensing/intuition, thinking/feeling, and judging/perceiving help the teacher understand that way a student thinks and learns. This understanding begins with understanding each student’s learning style through the MBTI and allows for a customized approach to pedagogy and a faster understating of the students’ musical preferences. For example, a student with an ENTJ/INTJ personality may appreciate a more direct, logical approach to teaching than a student with the ENFJ/INFJ who may prefer a more personal, sensitive approach. This study will feature pedagogical approaches for each personality type in the MBTI series and discuss the benefits of the MBTI in the journey of music pedagogy. It will further provide insight on the spiritual connection that can benefit the student/teacher dynamic and the necessary catalyst of the MBTI.
