Description
Globally, music education is at a critical juncture when arts and arts provisions are being sidelined, diminished, and repositioned within and across educational sectors. Recent studies speak to the arts being in crisis, with people leaving the sector because of reduced, tangible career pathways. This paper seeks to draw inspiration from the phenomenon that is ‘COLDPLAY’ whose line-up has never changed since they formed in 1997. With an unwavering connection with their audiences, Coldplay has stayed true to their core belief that goodness will always prevail. Music is never just about the sound. The material practices are more than ‘rift zones’ (repeated patterns) that suspend and foreground multisensorial and embodied forms. So, what can we learn from the intersection of sociological, cultural, musicological, and performance practice to build bridges across industry and music education?Drawing on previous analyses of Coldplay’s ‘Sky Full of Stars’ and ‘Fix You’ live performances, and a new investigation of ‘Viva la Vida’ we triangulate their treatment of co-authored musical delivery, songwriting, stage craftsmanship and creative integration of digital technologies to better understand what factors contribute to their unique collective aesthetic, and capacity to engage and captivate every member of the audience. What makes the ‘event’ that is Coldplay so mesmerising and unforgettable? How do they integrate production and stagecraft, drawing in every member of the audience through immersive, multisensory interactions that transcend beyond time and place? We employ a range of qualitative research methods, including online-distributed open-ended questionnaires and stylistically specific performance practice methodologies, to understand Coldplay, seeking to understand how these practices might flip the script on music education. What is it that we can learn from the Coldplay phenomenon that can inspire new ways to envision music education to provide more authentic, immersive, collective aesthetic, and ‘real’ learning experiences? Using live concert examples, musical analysis of composition and performance techniques, and triangulation of three key Coldplay songs, we explore how Coldplay creates a connection with their audience in highly empathetic ways. Employing diffractive analysis, we advance new understandings enabled by re-readings of a selection of videos from live recordings, triangulating how we come to see and re-see sensorial/material encounters, providing evidence of the myriad ways they employ affective immersive spaces with such engagement globally. Drawing down from these extracts and preliminary analysis of online responses, we seek to translate how we can build new bridges for music teaching and learning.
