Date & Time

Description
Inscribed on 14 December 2021 on UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, the Congolese rumba occupies a central place in contemporary cultural and educational dynamics in Central Africa. Strong of its status as a music with international reach, it presents itself not only as a major artistic practice, but also as an intergenerational foundation for the transmission of musical traditions. In the Republic of the Congo, rumba constitutes the form of modern music most shared between generations, thus ensuring a cultural continuity rare in contemporary African societies. However, despite this implicit educational function, the mode of transmission of the Congolese rumba remains largely based on oral tradition and informal learning. This reality contrasts with the requirements of 21st century education systems, which prioritize structured, standardized and theorized pedagogical frameworks. From then on, the issue arises of integrating the Congolese rumba into a formal musical pedagogy, capable of respecting cultural heritage and contemporary methods of teaching musical practice. This study thus questions, on the one hand, the current mechanisms of intergenerational transmission of the Congolese rumba in the Congolese educational context and, on the other hand, the perspectives of its adaptation to a contemporary musical pedagogy. Through a comparative approach, it highlights the strengths and limitations of traditional and institutional modes of transmission, with the aim of contributing to the valorization, intellectualization, and pedagogical structuring of the Congolese rumba as a basement of musical education while ensuring the preservation of its authenticity and cultural heritage in Central Africa.
