Cross-Cultural Transition: Exploring Musical Identity Formation among Hong Kong and Macao Students in US Conservatories
Date & Time
Monday, July 27, 2026, 12:20 PM - 12:50 PM
Description
In the spaces of American conservatories, young musicians from Hong Kong and Macao engage in a complex dialogue between past and present, East and West, tradition and transformation. Their musical identities - shaped by years of training in regions where Chinese heritage intersects with colonial influences - undergo profound evolution as they navigate college education in the United States. These students arrive carrying not just instruments, but intricate webs of musical meaning: traditional Chinese aesthetics learned from local contexts, Western classical training begun in childhood, popular music absorbed through global media, and deeply personal connections to particular genres and styles. As they encounter new teaching methods, performance expectations, and peer influences in US conservatories, these young musicians must reconcile multiple musical worlds. This research incorporates both qualitative interview responses and quantitative survey results conducted with 21 current Hong Kong and Macao students across five US conservatories. The interviews and surveys centered on how these musicians negotiate their evolving musical identities during a critical developmental period. It further explored how musicians maintain connections to their cultural musical roots while embracing new influences, how they integrate different approaches to musical expression and interpretation, and how their understanding of themselves as musicians transforms through cross-cultural exchange. By focusing on the unique experiences of Hong Kong and Macao students, this study offers insights into how musical identity develops in an increasingly interconnected global landscape.
