Description
This study explores how language barriers influence children's participation, expression, and development in early music learning at preschool levels. In many preschool music classes, non-native English speaking children are often misunderstood as “silent”, “lack of interest” or “lack of ability” due to language comprehension barriers and cultural differences. Although music is often regarded as a “universal language”, it still relies on a large number of linguistic instructions and cultural contexts in its teaching practice, which sets potential obstacles for children with limited English ability or language asymmetry. This study used qualitative interviews to collect empirical observations from parents and preschool teachers to explore the real challenges and coping strategies behind language barriers. It is found that music, as a medium of symbolic expression and non-verbal communication, can help children convey emotions, construct self-identity, and establish connections with others in the stage of language limitation. Through more inclusive design, such as body movement demonstration, repetitive melodies and lyrics, image guidance, and integration of multi-cultural teaching materials, teachers can lower the language barrier and allow all children to naturally integrate in games and interactions. At the same time, the research also emphasizes that music has natural tolerance and healing as a form of nonverbal communication: children can use music for emotional release, cross-cultural communication and social interaction, especially suitable for the stage where language expression is immature. The study calls on preschool educators to reconstruct the curriculum language load and combine gamification, multimodality, and culturally responsive teaching strategies to create a safer and more diverse music learning space for each child, let them find their place in the music and establish a voice.
