Description
In times of rapid social and educational change, music educators are called to reimagine how classroom experiences can foster human connection, creativity, and resilience. Participatory music making (PMM) offers a powerful framework to center humanity in music education by emphasizing process, collaboration, and shared ownership of musical experiences. This presentation shares findings from a comprehensive literature review on PMM, examining practices such as ensemble playing, improvisation, circle music, and community-based approaches. The research highlights the social-emotional and pedagogical benefits of PMM, including fostering belonging, validating cultural identities, supporting student agency, and strengthening adaptability through improvisation. Importantly, studies demonstrate that the process of playing together has a profound impact on the product, enhancing purposeful engagement and deepening both artistic and interpersonal outcomes. While ensemble playing is a standard feature of many educational contexts, this review suggests that educators should intentionally shift focus from routine performance preparation toward cultivating shared leadership and validating diverse processes of music making. Doing so nurtures not only technical musicianship but also human growth—encouraging empathy, trust, and intercultural understanding in the classroom. The session will present key themes from the literature alongside practical examples from higher education and K-12 contexts. Participants will be invited to consider how PMM principles can be integrated into their own teaching to create more inclusive, creative, and resilient learning environments.Ultimately, this presentation issues a call to action: for educators to play more with their students. By centering participatory practices, we can reimagine music education as a humanizing force that helps learners navigate change with joy, creativity, and a stronger sense of belonging.
