Description
This paper considers how embedding Makaton© within music education provides enhanced opportunities for students to express themselves and engage with others effectively thereby overcoming barriers to participation and ensuring quality music education for all.For students with language and communication difficulties the importance of music should not be underestimated. When combined with music, the impact of Makaton deepens, offering both educational and social benefits. Pairing Makaton with singing provides a sensory-rich experience that supports emotional well-being and social interaction and facilitates the development of essential communication skills.‘A World of Wonder’ was written specifically to be used with Makaton, comprising two separate melodies that can be combined as partner songs. Signing can be used at a key-word or functional level making the resource adaptable to the needs of the singers inviting all learners to participate at their own level.Originally developed in the UK, Makaton has benefitted millions of people with communication challenges across the world, offering a multi-modal, evidence-based approach using signs and symbols alongside speech. Studies show Makaton enhances language acquisition and songs can be signed in order to teach and reinforce vocabulary and improve cognition and literacy. Makaton can serve as a bridge to understanding complex concepts allowing participants to access lyrical content and experience a deeper understanding of emotion through music.Makaton signing offers opportunities to improve both gross and fine motor skills and encourages the development of speech making it a vital element of inclusive education, helping students flourish. The visual nature of Makaton symbols can also play an important role as they can bridge the gap between auditory and visual learning. This makes learning more engaging and helps turn abstract ideas into something tangible and permanent.Makaton adds a physical and visual layer to musical expression with the signs helping to convey the emotional tone of the song - in this case the beauty of our world - thus making it more meaningful. Singers are able to connect with the lyrics on a deeper level even if they are unable to vocalise them. Makaton provides a method of self-expression allowing the teaching of and participation in singing to be tailored to different learning styles and needs.‘Once you discover the magic of Makaton , you’ll never want to let it go.’
