Description
In 2025 the inaugural Berkswell Music Festival (BMF) was created in response to a challenge to ‘put on a music festival for the village and wider community’. Building on an already established Come & Sing programme provided impetus to grow the festival with fringe concerts, school workshops and recitals, the BMF ‘blueprint’ using music as a bridge to bring people together. We appointed a patron and composer and marketed the event locally and on social media. This all provides context for the Madrigal Mystery Tour, the Friday night entertainment, when five choirs exploited the soniferous qualities of the church, including the crypt and gallery. From the outset BMF sought to celebrate the unique features of the building and its immediate surroundings, as each choir sang from their own space. There was no central stage, sound emanating from everywhere: ‘Let all the world in every corner sing!’ George Herbert (1593-1633) would have approved. The choirs, which had never met before, joined together in a harmoniously to sing the final song of each other’s set, thus sharing repertoire and building musical bridges. The Festival Choir, drawing singers from each choir, performed a specially commissioned Kyrie, before the final procession to the village green leading to the madrigal finale. Rounding off the entertainment at the Bear Inn was the Encore event which enabled singers to mingle socially and celebrate the evening. As BMF gathered momentum, support was offered from a variety of sources within the local community with the local cafe offering picnic boxes for the community picnic, a marquee provided in anticipation of poor weather, music-themed floral displays in the church and the local pub staging a sing-along. There was a real desire for BMF to be successful that spread beyond the musicians. Choirs welcomed the opportunity for collaboration and many singers commented on the variety of repertoire and imaginative staging of the Madrigal Mystery Tour. The involvement of the local primary school and the presence of the Blue Coat school choir reinforced the power of music to unite generations with a beautiful, spiritual rendition of Leonard Cohen’s Hallelujah (1984) being one of the many musical highlights. This innovative festival blueprint provides a solid framework for future events at Berkswell and beyond with the clear message that opportunities for collaborative music-making are essential if we are to bring communities and generations together.
