Description
Luis Antonio Calvo is one of the most celebrated composers of Colombian salon music for piano during the first decades of the 20th century (Oxford). Unfortunately this well-known Colombian composer is largely invisible and currently not typically performed within the western pianistic classical canon of music. Living in Bogota from 1905, his career took an unusual trajectory after a diagnosis of leprosy at the age of 34. He was confined for the remainder of his life at the Agnus de Dios Leprosy Colony where he wrote the majority of his piano works. Calvo’s compositional output, within such extreme forced isolated circumstances, is even more remarkable.Calvo wrote many piano works based on Colombian dances as well as character pieces such as intermezzi. His very identifiable Spanish styled works sound difficult, but many are at an early advanced levels 7 -10+ (Jane Magrath system, Magrath 2021).Solo piano works presented via recording within the workshop include:Intermezzo No 2 (Lejano Azul)MalvalocaAdios BogotaGenio Alegre (Pasillo)After a brief analysis focusing on the teaching elements making these works easy for students to learn, publicly available recordings by well-know Colombian pianists, will be listed, demonstrating aspects of the works. Colombian pianists listed and performing works include Teresita Gomez, Harold Martina, and Helvia Mendoza.Luis Calvo’s piano works are immediately striking, often heartfelt and filled with pathos and yearning, while contrasted with his upbeat dance-styled pieces. His piano music fits the hand well, and is immediately accessible to audiences. It’s both surprising and unfortunate that his piano works are not better known internationally. On a personal note, teaching an international student from Colombia, I asked about Luis Calvo, and the student began to immediately perform two of Calvo’s well-known works. This brought home to me again, that Luis Calvo’s music is popular in Colombia, but is invisible within the western canon .Hopefully pianists, teachers and students, by becoming familiar with Luis Calvo’s works, will begin to incorporate them into teaching and performing. Currently Calvo’s piano works are primarily available on IMSLP. Ultimately, it is hoped that Luis Calvo’s Colombian piano works become more visible and a part of the piano repertoire canon for performers, teachers, and students.
