Name
A Comparative Study of Children’s Choirs from Different Cultural Backgrounds
Date & Time
Wednesday, July 29, 2026, 2:20 PM - 2:50 PM
Description
This study investigates how cultural and educational contexts shape children’s choir practices through a comparative analysis of the Beijing Philharmonic Choir (BPC) in China and the Sydney Children’s Choir (SCC) in Australia. Although children’s choirs play an important role in music education worldwide, cross-cultural comparative research remains limited, particularly between China and Australia. Research on the BPC, an ensemble with more than forty years of achievements, is virtually non-existent, highlighting the need for this study. The BPC adopts a highly structured training model, characterised by competitive admission, systematic progression, and a strong emphasis on discipline and national cultural heritage. In contrast, the SCC promotes inclusivity, creativity, and intercultural awareness, reflecting Australia’s multicultural context. This project employs a qualitative case study approach. Data will be collected through semi-structured interviews with conductors, parents, and choristers aged 12-18; field observations of rehearsals and performances; and repertoire analysis. The interview protocols are designed to elicit children’s experiences of belonging, teachers’ educational philosophies, and parents’ perceptions of impact, ensuring alignment between research questions and methods.By situating children’s choir practices within their broader socio-cultural frameworks, this research contributes to understanding how educational values, pedagogical approaches, and repertoire choices both reflect and shape cultural identity. The findings will inform more inclusive and culturally responsive choral pedagogy, offering practical implications for music educators and choir conductors. Beyond its academic significance, the project also holds potential to foster intercultural dialogue and collaboration between choirs across national contexts.
