Description
Among the direct consequences of an Acoustic Neuroma (AN) is facial paralysis. AN is a type of benign brain tumor (Stott, Albertz & Cristian Aedo, 2008). This, without a doubt, represents a significant challenge for a performing musician, as it threatens the continuity of their professional career and the technical mastery they've acquired on their instrument. This autobiographical study documents the process of resilience (physical and emotional recovery) and professional readaptation of a trombonist who, after suffering this trauma, rebuilt his technique and reconfigured his approach to life. Resilience, defined as the capacity for positive adaptation in the face of disruptive events (Cabanyes, 2010; RAE, 2019), becomes a central axis of this process. The implementation of meaningful musical learning strategies (Rusinek, 2005), systematized under the guidance of authors like Mejía (2015), enabled the development of a specific study method that integrates motor, mental, and attitudinal exercises. As part of this process, a prototype for a bass trombone mouthpiece was created and is currently pending patent. Both contributions have been validated at various international academic events in Brazil, Colombia, France, Spain, the United States, and Argentina between 2018 and 2024, where the now-recovered performer participated as a guest artist, demonstrating and presenting his progress.Among the main conclusions, a scarcity of documentation and training in the musical community regarding specific diseases in musicians and mental health stands out, which highlights the importance of this case study. Thus, resilience is revealed as a tool that not only allowed for overcoming trauma but also constitutes an essential skill for fostering and guiding long-term professional development.Ultimately, this proposal not only seeks to contribute to the documentation processes on muscular pathologies and mental health in musicians, but also to offer a message of hope and a practical model for students and professionals facing adversity."
