Reinterpretation of Oral Tradition Music through Collaborative Artistic Creation
Date & Time
Thursday, July 30, 2026, 2:20 PM - 2:50 PM
Description
This proposal, derived from the doctoral thesis “The Bass Trombone in Colombian Oral Tradition Music: An Approach from Culturally Informed Performance,” aims to study the influence of sociocultural contexts on the performance and reinterpretation of oral tradition music. In the case of Colombia, this music develops primarily within rural, Indigenous, and Afro-Colombian communities (García de Rivera, 2013; Bermúdez, 1985). These are territories from which diverse sounds and artistic practices emerge, associated with ancient knowledge perpetuated by oral tradition (Hoyos, 2016). Along with expressions such as language, myths, and crafts, these practices constitute a pillar of heritage and, as the OEA states, represent the country's cultural diversity. Within this framework, and through collaborative artistic creation processes, a musical work was composed inspired by the "Construction of Being" (Du'u) ritual of the Tikuna indigenous community. This work serves as a research tool: a group of professional trombone players will analyze and perform it after a "Cultural Immersion" phase. This stage is managed through online training on the Moodle platform, where the musicians learn about the customs, rituals, and artistic practices of this community before the performance. As this is an ongoing research project, its scope and outcomes are aligned with UNESCO's vision: a) to contribute to the preservation and dissemination of Colombian folklore through the recording and international premiere of the created work; b) to promote new avenues for training and professional development through the performance of traditional music; and c) to establish the characteristics of collaborative artistic creation processes and their impact on musical performance.
