Description
To enhance children’s attentiveness and concentration, early childhood teachers should be prepared to use a range of pedagogical strategies and materials. Using picture books (PBs), enhanced by incorporating age-appropriate musical percussion instruments. Many PBs are available on the market, including those with accompanying CDs and digital PBs. Paper-based PBs remain popular as they can offer a shared interactive educational engagement, increase attention span and reduce screen time. Teacher over-reliance on PBs accompanying CDs can lead to decline in reading ability and formation of poor reading habits. Reading vivid and engaging PBs with teachers can stimulate children's imagination, creativity, and aesthetic appreciation. Rather than relying on pre-packaged CDs, teachers can enhance children’s engagement by using musical percussion instruments which can add diverse auditory stimulation, kinaesthetic reinforcement of learning and strengthen. This study explored the implementation effectiveness and challenges in using percussion instruments in conjunction with PB teaching to enhance preschoolers' concentration. The study employed observations by lead teacher and a researcher, teacher interviews, reflective journals, teaching recordings, and assessments of children's concentration. Participants were 14 two-year-old children in a daycare center in Taichung City Taiwan over a 12-week period. The PBs used were created by Taiwanese early childhood experts. Findings were that: Integrating percussion instruments into PB teaching helped children develop the ability to listen to music with curiosity and interest, to discuss, improve attention and understanding of stories, and showed positive effects on their ability to concentrate. Keywords: picture books, percussion instruments, concentration
