Date & Time

Description
In some ways, music learning is about artistic creation through the lens of other cultures. We play the works of composers from many countries, different time periods, unique perspectives, ways of doing and living, and so on. So, music teaching then becomes about understanding varied musical creativity, from how we are trained as music teachers, to how to we teach others, engage as performers, research music, composers, styles, performance practice, learning styles, children and adult learners, and on and on. Our work is a journey of discovery through dozens of countries, histories, traditions, practices, and experiences. In my 30+ years in music education, this work has manifested in K12 schools and universities, and in the United States and around the world. In learning about other cultures and ways of thinking, I have become a more informed musician, educator, researcher, and person, much through travel and experiencing varied and multicultural ways of living. As a college professor and teacher educator, professional development is at the center of my craft. This ranges from helping undergraduates on their path to certification and teaching in schools, to supporting master’s students to grow and improve their talents, to research and vocation with doctoral students in their advancement as experts and leaders. A recent sabbatical in Spring 2025 offered an amazing journey of learning and self-discovery that has changed my outlook on life and music and teaching and humanity. This session will highlight these experiences traveling to 10+ countries over 115+ days engaging with countless wonderful colleagues, students, musicians, artists, professors, performers, and people. Selected countries include Canada, Hong Kong, England, Ireland, South Africa, Germany, Switzerland, Lithuania, Spain, and Norway. The outline will be to narrate and discuss the purpose and logistics of the journey, each country and professional and personal experiences, highlight activities such as observing, lecturing, coaching, directing, conducting, teaching, touring, discussing, questioning, researching, mentoring, learning, developing, performing, musicking, producing, and growing. Finally, to connect the role of travel as beneficial to everyone, to be on the margins and see ways of living through a fresh lens and gain new respect and perspectives on music teaching and learning.
