Date & Time

Description
This study investigated the educational and community engagement activities of 33 orchestras to understand their key characteristics. We used a documentary analysis approach, gathering data from the orchestras' official websites, seasonal concert programs, and other published documents. The analysis was divided into two parts: quantitative data was examined using descriptive statistics, while qualitative data was analyzed through content analysis and presented narratively. Our findings reveal that these activities fall into five distinct categories. First, Performance-based Activities(n = 33) include musical performances both inside and outside the concert hall, recorded performances, and special events like pre-performance talks, open rehearsals, and ticket discounts. Second, Lecture and Discussion Activities (n = 26) involve creating educational media, organizing field trips to concert halls, hosting knowledge-sharing discussions, providing career guidance for musicians, and building music databases. Third, Workshop and Training Activities (n = 29) cover a wide range of skill-based programs, from teaching instrument playing, composing, and conducting to collaborative projects with schools and initiatives focused on music for health. Fourth, Project and Experiential Activities (n = 30) encompass larger-scale endeavors like establishing youth orchestras, offering short-term contracts and scholarships to young musicians, and hosting music competitions. Finally, a small group of Other Activities (n = 10) was created for programs that did not fit into the other four categories. The study concludes that orchestras are powerful vehicles for promoting lifelong learning, supporting formal, non-formal, and informal education. While many activities are designed for specific audiences, we found a growing trend towards creating more inclusive programs for people of all ages and genders. Our research also demonstrates that the design of many orchestra activities, whether intentionally or not, aligns with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). This suggests that orchestras are well-equipped to drive the success of the UNESCO 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, using their art to foster a more educated and engaged global community.
