Description
Primary school music teachers often face challenges in engaging their students, particularly when students perceive music class as irrelevant to their everyday lives. Digital gamification, which integrates game-based elements like points, levels, challenges, milestones, and reward systems into educational spaces, offers an accessible and flexible approach to enhance student motivation, participation, and collaboration in music education. This presentation provides a step-by-step framework for implementing digital gamification strategies in primary school music classrooms, designed to be adaptable across diverse and non-digital contexts. The aim is to support teachers in creating engaging, inclusive, and interactive musical experiences that resonate with students’ digital cultures, without requiring advanced technology or extensive resources. The framework draws on a master’s study conducted in South African Grade 7 music classrooms, where gamified activities were designed around core music curriculum strands, including listening, creating, and performing. Activities incorporated iPad-based applications, interactive challenges, digital progression systems, and collaborative tasks structured as quests. Teacher observations and student surveys were used to refine each activity through Action Research, ensuring that students with varying abilities could participate meaningfully and experience a sense of achievement. Results showed that gamified approaches increased student engagement, improved focus, and enhanced classroom participation. Previously disengaged students became active contributors, while collaborative activities encouraged peer support, empathy, and positive social interaction. The addition of digitally gamified activities also supported classroom management by providing clear goals, immediate feedback, and a framework for progression, creating a more structured learning environment. This presentation demonstrates how digital game-based strategies can bridge students’ digital interests with traditional music education, while promoting inclusivity, sustained engagement, and collaboration. The practical guideline offered is adaptable, sustainable, and easily implemented in varied school contexts, ensuring that all students can benefit from the advantages of gamified music activities.
