Songwriting pedagogy is in its infancy in music education (Draves, 2008; Kratus, 2016; Tobias, 2013; Randles, 2022). In this presentation, the researcher provides a rationale for incorporating songwriting workgroups into the operation of classroom teachers where songwriting at the middle school and high school levels is taught. Other topics in the presentation include production, listenership, lyric writing, recording, and the creative process (Dylan, 2022; Johansson, 2020; Perricone, 2018). The researcher utilizes vignettes of professional musicians who assume the various workgroup roles presented with connections to music education. Work by the artists at Motown, Dr. Dre’s Aftermath Studios, and The Wrecking Crew at Capital Records in Los Angeles are discussed. Songwriters writing songs in groups mimics the ways that humans communicate (Tweedy, 2020) and actualizes and affirms the human condition (Burnard, 2012). Implications for music education include classrooms looking and functioning much more like the worlds of professional music in the real world. In this presentation, the researcher provides support for incorporating songwriting workgroups into the operation of classroom teachers where songwriting at the middle school and high school levels is taught. Other topics in the presentation include production, listenership, lyric writing, recording, and the creative process (Dylan, 2022; Johansson, 2020; Perricone, 2018).
