Description
This presentation reimagines piano instruction through the lens of rhizomatic learning, drawing on Deleuze and Guattari’s philosophy to challenge traditional, linear approaches to instrumental pedagogy. Grounded in autoethnographic reflection and artistic research, the study documents over a decade of piano teaching experience to explore how learning unfolds beyond prescribed curricula and hierarchical skill-building.Rather than following fixed technical progressions, this approach maps nonlinear, affective, and embodied pathways—shaped by improvisation, emotional resonance, cultural memory, and interdisciplinary movement practices. The piano studio becomes a dynamic site where unexpected learning encounters emerge and where the teacher shifts from knowledge authority to co-explorer of meaning.Using artistic practice as both method and outcome, the study investigates how spontaneous detours, student-led discoveries, and expressive interruptions can serve as legitimate and generative pedagogical moments. These findings suggest that embracing multiplicity in the studio not only honors the learner’s agency, but also expands the possibilities of what it means to teach and learn an instrument. The presentation offers concrete reflections for instrumental educators seeking to move beyond standard routines, advocating for a more flexible, relational, and open-ended model of piano pedagogy—one where difference is not an error, but an invitation.
