Maestro or Maestra: Investigating the role of gender in conducting choirs
Date & Time
Thursday, July 30, 2026, 3:20 PM - 3:50 PM
Description
A choir conductor's responsibilities extend beyond timing and directing dynamics; they also include inspiring group musical expression, communicating, and exercising leadership. However, does the gender of the conductor affect the way a choir reacts, interprets, and performs? In order to determine whether gender affects choir dynamics, vocal interpretation, and ensemble cohesion, this presentation examines the relationship between gender studies and choral conducting.Using case studies, research, and anecdotal evidence, we tackle the following important questions: Do singers have different opinions about the leadership, expressiveness, and authority of male and female conductors? Are choirs' reactions to conductors influenced by unconscious gender biases? In the end, is musical leadership intrinsically gender-neutral, or does a conductor's gender impact their effectiveness? In order to identify patterns underlying gendered presumptions in the field, we will look at historical trends in conducting, contemporary debates in music education, and psychological research on leadership perception. Results from surveys and interviews with conductors and choir members provide practical insights into how these dynamics manifest in real-world situations. The goal of the session is to encourage inclusive, gender-sensitive methods of teaching music and to enhance knowledge of gender in choral contexts. By questioning conventional notions of authority in music leadership, we promote contemplation on how conductors of any gender can improve their leadership to more effectively inspire.
