Name
Cultivating Engaged Classrooms: A Holistic Approach to Music Education Management
Date & Time
Thursday, July 30, 2026, 11:50 AM - 12:50 PM
Description
This workshop offers music educators a comprehensive framework for effective classroom management, moving beyond traditional concepts of discipline as control, to foster environments where students thrive musically, academically, and personally. This involves exploring classroom management as a dynamic system encompassing the Teacher, Students, Content, and Context, drawing from Bronfenbrenner's Ecological Systems Theory to understand the overlapping layers of what makes up classroom learning and how to adjust these layers for positive outcomes. Attendees will work collaboratively in identifying music teaching variables within these layers, across ensemble and general music settings, that offer opportunities for growth and consideration given the larger systems of education they work within. We will then dive into the impact of teacher identity, experiences, and biases on classroom dynamics, emphasizing the importance of self-reflection and compassionate growth as teachers work through these elements during the workshop to consider realistic changemaking within their roles and capacities as busy teachers. The session will highlight how responsive teaching practices, informed by an understanding of student characteristics and diverse needs, can transform challenging behaviors into opportunities for connection and growth. We will introduce the "EATS" acronym (Escape, Attention, Tangible, Sensory) from Learning for Justice as a practical tool for understanding the underlying purposes of student behavior, enabling educators to design interventions that teach appropriate ways to meet these needs and create an action plan for when they find themselves in a challenging student encounter. Lastly, attendees will learn to cultivate student agency and intrinsic motivation through curriculum planning and goal setting exercises they can replicate in their classes, to explore how co-creating learning environments, integrating student choice in repertoire, and fostering collaborative music-making can lead to deeper engagement and improved retention in music programs. The workshop will emphasize culturally responsive approaches that honor students' musical preferences and lived experiences, expanding their understanding of music's role in well-being. Similarly, we will explore Universal Design for Learning as a manageable and equitable next step for teaching all learners within any class subject and grade level as continued learning opportunities for teachers looking for further next steps. This workshop equips music teachers with actionable strategies and research-grounded frameworks to build sustainable classroom management structures. Participants will leave with renewed confidence and practical tools to create inclusive, supportive, and musically enriching learning spaces where all students can flourish.
