Name
BraSil Beyond Bossa: Expanding the Jazz Ensemble’s Brazilian Repertoire
Date & Time
Wednesday, July 29, 2026, 1:50 PM - 2:50 PM
Description
Brazilian music is often narrowly represented in jazz settings, typically through Bossa Nova or Samba charts. While these styles are essential, they barely scratch the surface of Brazil’s rhythmic and cultural diversity. This workshop invites jazz musicians and ensemble directors to explore a broader spectrum of Brazilian genres, offering rich opportunities for arrangement, improvisation, and groove-based learning. Participants will delve into underrepresented styles, including Guarania (a slow, expressive rhythm from southern Brazil), Afoxé (an Afro-Brazilian groove rooted in Candomblé traditions and street performance), Maracatu (a powerful, layered rhythm from Pernambuco with deep African roots), and more. We’ll break down each style's foundational grooves, feel, form, instrumentation and discuss ways they can be authentically adapted and incorporated into jazz ensemble settings, whether for combos, big bands, or other ensembles.Expect hands-on rhythm work, ensemble exercises, listening examples, and practical strategies for expanding your band’s Brazilian repertoire beyond the predictable. Attendees will also gain insight into the historical and social contexts that shape these styles, equipping them to engage with them respectfully and creatively. At the end of the session, attendees will walk away with new grooves, fresh material for arranging or teaching, and a deeper understanding of how Brazilian music can inform and energize jazz performance and education beyond the usual charts.
