Name
Bridging Rhythms: Exploring the Sounds of Samba
Date & Time
Monday, July 27, 2026, 2:50 PM - 3:50 PM
Description
For decades, Brazilian music has captivated musicians and audiences worldwide. From the vibrant energy of Samba that gained international recognition in the 1930s and 40s through artists like Carmen Miranda, to the smooth sophistication of Bossa Nova that inspired jazz legends such as Stan Getz and Charlie Byrd, Brazilian styles have long served as bridges between cultures and genres. This interactive workshop invites participants to explore the rhythmic, melodic, and harmonic foundations of Samba through hands-on learning. Grounded in a world music pedagogy approach, the session engages participants in exploring characteristic rhythmic patterns, melodic contours, and the vital role of the rhythm section in shaping groove and expression. Through the five dimensions of world music pedagogy (attentive listening, engaged listening, enactive listening, creating world music, and integrating world music), participants will develop tools to interpret and create Samba music with stylistic authenticity, creativity, and confidence.
