Name
Aligned to Play: Exploring Postural Alignment and Ease in Instrumental Practice
Date & Time
Tuesday, July 28, 2026, 4:35 PM - 5:35 PM
Description
This interactive workshop addresses the high prevalence of musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) among musicians, highlighting how these conditions can significantly interfere with learning, technical progress, and performance enjoyment. Among the numerous risk factors associated with instrumental practice, this workshop focuses on postural imbalance, which has been identified as one of the most significant (Rousseau et al., 2023). Following a brief overview of the main physical risk factors associated with instrumental practice, participants will explore the basic principles of balanced posture in sitting and standing positions through guided movement experiences. The workshop supports music teachers’ abilities to observe postural elements in their students, to identify sources of imbalance, and to guide effective adjustments using simple, targeted exercises. Practical tools and strategies will be demonstrated with volunteer participants, then explored in pairs or small groups. Key concepts such as segmental alignment, muscle tone, alternation between work and rest positions, and ergonomic adaptation of furniture to individual morphology will be addressed. In line with NIOSH recommendations highlighting several prevention strategies, including risk identification, workstation adjustment, and education (NIOSH, 1997), this workshop aims to foster a culture of prevention within music education. By combining theory, observation, and embodied exploration, it provides educators with accessible tools to promote postural awareness, prevent musculoskeletal strain, and encourage more balanced and efficient instrumental practice.
