Name
Bridging the Gap: Connecting Choral Rehearsal Practice to Functional Piano Skills
Date & Time
Wednesday, July 29, 2026, 10:50 AM - 11:50 AM
Description
Class piano courses emphasize the development of functional skills that allow students to apply their piano abilities across various future career fields. These courses cover a range of functional skills, including harmonization, transposition, improvisation, accompaniment, score reading, chord progression, etc. In the United States, music majors are typically required to take group piano classes. Their future career paths demand different functional skills. For instance, in a K-12 setting, a choral director may need to understand how to read the open scores, interpret chord symbols, and harmonize melodies. As for the instructors teaching class piano, their diverse backgrounds may not have access to the resources needed to address the needs of choral track music education majors. This presentation is designed for group piano instructors in higher education and K-12 choral music educators. The session offers a comprehensive look at how the piano is practically and effectively integrated into choral rehearsals. We will walk through the essential piano skills that choral music education students need to develop in group piano. Repertoires that are widely recognized in K-12 choral programs will be shared for elementary (K-5) and secondary (6-12) levels. In addition, a comprehensive rubric will be provided, which reflects the expectation that functional piano skills need to be achieved. This presentation will demonstrate repertoires from various levels that promote diversity. We will use Three Dominican Folk Songs by Francisco Núñez, arranged for unison treble voices elementary children’s chorus, as an example. In this session, we will illustrate how to implement functional piano skills when rehearsing this piece, such as accompaniment, score reading, and harmonization. Furthermore, strategies specifically for choral music education will be addressed, such as rehearsing standing up at the piano and conducting the choir, cueing breaths, mouthing diction, and playing without looking at the keyboard. Another example could be Homeward Bound by Jay Althouse. We will talk about how to guide students to reduce the piano accompaniment, which is related to the analysis of the phrasing, fingering, and voice selection. The audience will have direct takeaways on the most beneficial keyboard skills for future choral directors and how to bridge the gap between piano class and a real rehearsal situation. A suggested curriculum building will be provided. This aims to equip the group piano instructors with a step-by-step guide that supports students entering the K-12 choral conducting profession.
