Introduction to Popular Music Education: The Music Will Approach
Date & Time
Wednesday, July 29, 2026, 11:50 AM - 12:50 PM
Description
This hands-on workshop is centered on the belief that learning is most impactful when young people are engaged in making music that reflects their musical and personal identities. The Music Will Approach (MWA) to popular music education is currently used in thousands of classrooms throughout the United States, with the goal of teaching culturally relevant student-driven music. This approach centers learner-led experiences that are relevant and sustainable in ways that contribute to students’ social, educational, and musical growth. It empowers students to make music that’s meaningful to them in ways that are meaningful to them.In this workshop, we will start by "doing" a few activities in popular music education, such as singing, improvising, learning basic drum-beats, and then "explaining" how these activities relate to the core values of the MWA. Participants will experience first hand how the role of the teacher becomes one of facilitator while the students become decision makers. The classroom becomes a place for everyone where cultural context plays a large part of the instruction. The focus of the approach is on scaffolding, approximation, replication and creation, having a co-created space, and Doing-Before-Explaining. All attendees will gain knowledge and access to a variety of resource materials for instruction on popular instruments such as guitar, bass, drums, technology, ukulele, keyboards, and vocal instruction.
