Reading music through movement and creative work
Date & Time

Description
Many ensemble leaders and conductors currently face increasing challenges because people’s ability to read music notation has declined. This lack of proficiency affects the possibility of making music together.Sight reading, similar to reading a text, is a skill that needs to be trained. It is not enough just to have it explained. One needs to practice it in order to learn! But how can a teacher facilitate this process? Furthermore, how does one teach reading music notation in an efficient and fun way?Music, and spoken language, is based on the same components: pulse, rhythm, tempo, emphasis, melody, dynamics and timbre. From current research and experience on how to learn to read and write text, I have developed methods to teach reading music notation through movement. The methods involved combining traditional Dalcroze activities with strategies from literacy pedagogy.During this workshop we will try some practical activities that can be adapted for different musical levels, different age groups and different musical genres. The activities are based on the Dalcroze approach and combined with methods for teaching reading and writing language.I will also give some examples from my work in this area and share some video recordings of how I use movement and creative group work to teach reading music notation.
