Face the facts: A workshop demonstrating the functional anatomy underpinning the embouchure
Date & Time
Thursday, July 30, 2026, 10:50 AM - 11:50 AM
Description
Embouchure syndrome (ES), whereby the functioning of the embouchure is non-optimal either from injury or difficulty controlling all necessary orofacial movements, is a highly prevalent and debilitating condition in wind musicians across musical genres (Steinmetz et al 2014; Storms et al 2016; Termsarasab & Frucht 2016; Moon 2024). Despite this, little is understood about the anatomy underpinning the embouchure or how to specifically address issues should they arise, leading to a tendency towards a 'just play' approach no matter what it looks like (Skyring 2019; Miles 2019).In this workshop, a program for assessing and retraining musculature of the embouchure to restore balance and control will be demonstrated. This work stems from (i) consensus opinions from health experts working with embouchure syndrome (Woldendorp et al 2019) (ii) surface electromyography research of how the facial muscles work during wind performance in professionals musicians (Ackermann, submitted) (iii) a tested protocol for assessing and retraining embouchure (Ackermann & Altenmüller, submitted) (iv) details of muscular activity obtained via ultrasound investigation of facial muscles of wind musicians (Su et al 2025). Most of the retraining will be done off instrument, with this 'face gym' that focusses on supporting, balancing and increasing control of the facial muscles in a way that therefore minimises distraction on the instrument during performance. Music teachers are invited to bring their instruments to demonstrate some of the assessable aspects of typical kinds of embouchure syndrome as it appears during musical performance. The most important components of the retraining protocol will be taught and practiced alongside understanding how the particular anatomical structure of this area creates some of the typical challenges experienced. With this understanding, teachers will be better able to identify common sources of issues that may be present in embouchure syndrome.
